In an era where AI can generate a bibliography in seconds, the role of the library is shifting from providing access to information to fostering a mastery of insight. As AI tools become ubiquitous on campus, the most critical skills for students are increasingly recognized as those that remain uniquely human.

Librarians and digital scholarship experts are now at the forefront of teaching information discernment. While AI can provide answers, it cannot provide context, verify nuanced accuracy, or understand the ethical implications of data usage. The mission of higher ed libraries in 2026 focuses on helping students navigate this AI-driven world by emphasizing information literacy and ensuring that digital scholarship remains grounded in human critical thinking. By focusing on ethics, bias, and the very real limitations of these tools, library professionals are ensuring that the next generation of researchers can use technology to enhance, rather than replace, human inquiry. There may be no more important work to ensure the continuation of academia for future generations.
