The TA as the Bridge to Belonging

Because TAs exist in the narrow liminal space between student and professor, they are uniquely equipped to handle what researchers call Relational Pedagogy. This involves more than just explaining a formula; itโ€™s about navigating the Hidden Curriculum, the unspoken academic norms that often alienate first-generation or marginalized students.

For discussion:

The "Peer-Expert" Paradox: Research shows that students are significantly more likely to disclose academic struggle  to a TA than to a Lead Instructor.

  • Are TAs receiving training to handle these disclosures as pedagogical opportunities, or are TAs strictly getting training on grading rubrics?
