External Group invites to GWfE account - restricted?

Having a tough time finding a definitive answer, so thought I'd try here.

Are there any restrictions for a user in our GWfE  domain that would prevent them from using their workspace account to join a non-workspace/non-edu external Google Group?  If so, can someone point me towards the documentation on said limitations?

If not, is there any admin-side controls for such a thing?

The only info I'm finding is almost exclusively about allowing External people IN to our groups. But I'm asking out an external group inviting our users.

For your users to be able to join external Google Groups, the additional service Google Groups must be enabled for the OU or group those users are in.

The Workspace app Groups for Business only manages internal groups.

The difference is described in this support article.

The only thing I can think of that would affect that is whether or not you have both the core Groups for Business and the consumer/non-core Google Groups enabled.

And even then, folks would probably still be able to be a part of external Groups, they’d just have to use the email commands (groupname+subscribe, etc.) instead of the web UI to manage their memberships.

Disclaimer: it’s been about 8 years since I did a deep dive on this….

We once set up some generic accounts for a beta test program, and Google wanted us to add the users to a group of theirs, external to us.  We had enabled all the appropriate services, but kept getting error messages when trying to get the account to join the external group.

In our case the issue was that our beta test accounts were in an OU that was not explicitly marked as having all users over 18.

You may wish to check Google Admin>Account>Account settings>Age based access settings and verify that the OU for your user is marked as "All users in this group or org unit are 18 or older" (if that is true).
