Anyone else having issues with playing embedded videos from Google Slides. We are getting "Unable to play video. Error:150" . We are currently on Education Plus

A quick Google search shows that there seems to be an issue Google is aware of

I've seen it talked about before. Then I assume there is no solution yet.

In my Amplified forum there is a lot of talk about this. It seems it may have something to do with content creators not getting ad revenue by embedded videos. We believe it is a not a bug but now as intended. Naturally if you don't embedded but just link the video works with now problem.

Would it happen on embedded Google Classroom videos as well? Interesting. That would become a real problem as that is part of how we ensure children can only access appropriate material.

Per my Google support cases, the issue embedding Youtube video in Slides and Classroom is expected behavior for videos that include copyrighted content.

They are still investigating why the "watch on youtube" link in Classroom opens a tab that fails to play.

Please let me know if anyone can identify any affected videos that do not include entries in the "Licenses" section. (As shown here)

Oh, that's an interesting twist.

Even when you Google the reason it will show it is from Copyright content. Personal content plays just not copyrighted

Iterative update from support after we identified a video that did not have a license section.
(Still looking for more/better samples)

Thank you for getting back to us. I understand that the issue is reproducible with a video that does not have licenses.

I have reviewed the video from the provided URL, although it does not have a licenses section it has some copyright details:

Music © 2014 Rock'n'Rainbow Music Publishing
Video © 2014 Rainbow Songs Inc.

Upon further investigating with my colleagues there is an existing internal ticket opened for this issue. I have added your case to the report of the internal ticket #298119298.

Error code 150 indicates that the video is not playable in the embed player, and can only be played on youtube.com. The public documentation mentions "Note that for YouTube videos within Google Workspace for Education services - like Google Classroom - some videos may not be playable, including private videos and some videos with music" [1]. Thus this is expected behaviour, as a workaround you can insert the video as a link (Insert > Link) this way the video will be played in YouTube in a new tab.

Excuse my perhaps dumb question. But everything has a copyright, just that some license their work under free to use.

For instance I tried this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnnVBJvs3uM

This is music by Kevin MacLeod. He has a huge body of work, all free to use on Youtube (and monetize). But still I can't embed this in a Slide. MacLeods music is even included in Youtube's own music archive.

So what exactly do Google mean when they say copyright?

Per your play video in youtube. As our children are U13 they do no have YouTube turned on as a service so they actually cannot access it so it does not work for them either. Which is what we want here. But we DO want to be able to play embedded content in edu environments.

We had to chnage our youtube settings for 10,11, 12 and staff to Unrestricted youtube access . Other wise staff would be ok but the student would get the error even if we went to moderate for students. This change was from the top setting which is Strict restricted YouTube access . The teacher did have a work around which was put the link in the slide show and not embed it.

This is causing some teachers a real issue. I will investigate the Unrestricted setting but I'm not sure it's a solution we will be happy to implement

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6oYyG0KcvQ doesn't appear to have license information but still won't play.

Some of the videos that will play in a sheet will play eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0npW4WoGmc which does appear to have License information, but the majority won't which is frustrating.

The only way I have found to extract the links from the document is to print the page as a pdf and use that to open the links, is there a better way to extract all youtube links from a slide presentation?

thanks

This really is a lot of fun..... 😞

There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason why one video plays and another doesn't.

Here are examples of both, in Slides and Sites.

The support requests we opened have moved into internal feature requests, and I think I'm at a point where I can describe this issue more cohesively for the community. As such I'm making another top level post to direct affected domains to a community facing feature request.

As a side effect we now have questions RE 3rd party "tools".
I don't want to head this route, but it is a progression from such a stark change in access.

One option that feel less-bad is yout-ube.com which reformats videos into
youtube-nocookie.com/embed/IDgoesHere

I'm still not 100% that this is within the TOS/child-protection that YouTube API agreements is going for, but the use of this redirected domain IS documented by Google
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/171780#zippy=%2Cturn-on-privacy-enhanced-mode:~:text=si[…]...

As it's documented, I'd feel good about using that solution.

"...if your organization allowed or blocked YouTube videos within Google Workspace for Education services, you were asked to add “www.youtubeeducation.com” to these allowlists or blocklists."

So, if I neither allowed or blocked this new address, nor ever allowed/blocked www.youtube.com, I don't have to do anything now? 🙂
