The presence of AI on campus has become nearly universal. A massive survey of 94,000 respondents at California State University indicates that 95% of the campus community has utilized AI tools, with ChatGPT serving as the most popular choice.
For TAs and tutors, this creates a complex dynamic. While 80% of students report feeling uncomfortable submitting AI-generated work as their own, the pressure to use these tools remains high. Many students express a belief that they must use AI simply to keep pace with a changing job market.
As the frontline of student support, TAs are often positioned between faculty who may forbid AI and students who use it to summarize lecture notes or proofread assignments. Moving forward, the focus for support staff is shifting from policing to literacy—helping students use these tools effectively and responsibly while continuing to develop their own critical thinking skills.
