Requirement to re-confirm access to Google Additional Service for users under 18: March Deadline

Educational institutions are now required to annually review and re-confirm access to Google Additional Services for users under 18. Admins will be prompted in Admin Console to review additional Google services that are turned on in your institutions and re-confirm access to these services for users under 18.

As a reminder, the Google Workspace for Education Terms require that institutions obtain parental consent before users under 18 can access any Additional Google Service.

Admins have until March 2025 to complete this re-confirmation for additional Google services for users under 18. After March 2025, for any additional Google service that you have not re-confirmed access to, users designated as under 18 can no longer use that service with their Google Workspace for Education account. Admins can re-confirm access to Additional Services after the deadline to restore access to any users designated as under 18.

We notified all Primary Admins on March 5th  with a recent MSA notification “Subject: [Action Required] Re-confirm access to Google Additional Services for users under 18” and available to view in the Alert Center within the Admin Console.

Resources for Admins

  • Learn more about Additional Services
  • Review this help center article to guide you with reviewing and re-confirming Additional Services, which also includes step by step instructional video.
  • Review the Communicating with Parents and Guardians about Google Workspace for Education guide to learn more about students’ use of Google services accessed with Google Workspace for Education accounts, and help obtain parental consent where required.
  • Your institution may have a variety of ways in which you manage the collection and tracking of parental consent, including paper consent forms and/or digital consent. In case it is helpful, Google provides a template that schools can use to gather required parental consent for additional services and for users under 18.
  • This is an annual confirmation process, and we will remind you of the deadline, but feel free to create a reminder in your Google calendar now.
  • This, and other important information, is often communicated via MSAs. MSAs go to the primary admin. Check now to confirm your primary admin receives MSAs.

Annual re-confirm is fine, but it's more than a little annoying that the notification doesn't go away when consent is confirmed.

I don't want that yellow notification wasting my screen real estate always.

It should only be visible a short period before the next deadline, like a month, and then immediately go away when I have re-confirmed.

I can open a separate topic but wondering about how best to handle as a Higher Ed

  • We have a students OU where all our active students reside
  • We have the Age Based Access setting for that OU as "All users in this group or org unit are 18 or older"
  • We have a group created for users that are under 18, which has the Age Based Access setting set to "Some or all users in this group or org unit are under 18"

Is that a proper way to accomplish the age-requirement? The students in the student OU who are not in the Age-restricted group will have full access to additional services, but if a student in that OU is a member of the Age-restricted group they will have the services restricted?

I'm sure this topic is pretty straightforward but I am having a difficult time conceptualizing it because of different settings for OU/group and then the consent portion.

For example, if I were to approve consent for all apps requiring it, but then having this group of under 18 year old's, would they then have restricted access because they're a member of the group of being under 18 regardless of consent? How do I unconsent a service?

If I leave consent as "needs consent", will users above 18 (not in the age restricted group) still have full access to the services, and only those users in the age restricted group (under 18) get restricted automatically?

Does "Until March 2025" mean March 1st? Or March 31st? That's a big difference....

appears to be march 1st... as today the 3rd it's red and saying the services have been turned off for users under 18

Today the banner looked like this, and I was able to click Dismiss, and it went away, and didn't come back.

Anyone know when they will actually start killing services?  As mentioned previously, it now says, "Users under 18 can no longer access unconfirmed Additional Google services"  yet, they are still accessible as of this writing.

Another month later...

Under-18s still have access to everything at your place, @msnead ?

I read that you have set the /Students OU as Over-18 and have the Under-18s in a group? That should work.

We consented services a couple weeks ago so don't know now.
