Chat safer with new settings for students in Google Chat

Up until now, if you wanted students to be able to participate in Chats or Spaces created by teachers or other staff, you also had to let them create their own spaces and chat with any internal user.

Now you get a setting where you can restrict creation of spaces and Chats, but still allow users to participate in such created by others.

Here's the actual setting.

Setting is manageable both by OU and Groups, just like we want it. 🙂

So excited to test this out. We have specifically disabled Chat for students. You beat me to posting this update. Thanks!

Hi. I'm fighting first week fires - thanks for pushing this out. Quick question as I don't fully understand the interaction among Workspace apps - does this console setting also influence the behavior of:

Shared Drive documents (docs, sheets, slides, etc) - our kids discovered this capability during hybrid learning days

Classroom streams

I'm thinking that Groups are wholly independent and the internal groups controls can do the fine tuning on who can post and who can't, but I've probably missed other opportunities to collaborate that are there in Workspace.

This grates against my small L libertarian instincts, and it won't be a problem once we teach kids to use their powers for good and not evil, but in the meantime they need some guidance and moderation. We've seen instances of severe harm from cruel messaging, just a bit here but lots in the community. Thanks!

Hi Don.

No, this has absolutely nothing to do with other means of communication, only Chat/Spaces.
