Hello Global GEG community!

Our March theme of Equity and Access in STEM focuses on creating an environment where every student can engage with complex information without being slowed down by administrative or logistical hurdles. This week's updates from Google Workspace are designed to do exactly that—bringing more flexibility to how we research, meet, and coordinate across borders.

📓 New Ways to Customize and Interact in NotebookLM

NotebookLM is a powerful ally in the STEM classroom, helping students synthesize dense scientific texts. This week brings several major updates to give users more flexibility:

  • Flexible Sources: New ways to upload and interact with sources mean students can more easily ground their STEM research in diverse materials.
  • Visual Creation: You can now create and edit visuals directly from NotebookLM, helping students transform data into clear, accessible infographics or diagrams.
  • Impact: These enhancements allow students with different learning styles to engage more deeply with STEM content, ensuring that "access" translates into true understanding.

🗓️ Smart Time Zone Search in Google Calendar

Coordinating with global STEM mentors or international lab partners can be a headache. You can now search for time zones by city or country in Google Calendar on the web.

  • Equity Impact: Instead of manually calculating offsets, this tool allows for seamless scheduling between our Global GEG chapters, ensuring that no region is left out of the conversation due to scheduling friction.

💬 The "Meetings" Section in Google Chat

To keep our STEM project discussions organized, Google Chat is introducing a dedicated Meetings section. This centralizes all your meeting-related conversations in one place, separate from your direct messages.

  • Organization Impact: For students managing multiple coding or engineering groups, this ensures that meeting notes and technical discussions are always easy to find and reference.

🛡️ Enhanced Workspace Audit Logs

For our IT Admins and STEM Lead educators, Google is expanding the functionality of Workspace audit logs. New event fields and filtering capabilities provide better visibility into how tools are being used across the domain.

💡 Note: Features like the NotebookLM visual tools are rolling out to users over the age of 18 in most regions. I recommend checking with your IT Administrator to see which of these updates are active for your specific students and faculty.
