Hello, Global GEG!

Tomorrow is Earth Day, and the timing couldn’t be better. As we move into the second half of our month focused on Creativity & Sustainability, we are shifting our energy from observation to advocacy.

The theme for Earth Day 2026 is "Our Power, Our Planet." It’s a call to recognize that while the challenges facing our environment are global, the power to solve them is local, individual, and deeply creative. In 2026, we aren't just teaching students about the planet; we are empowering them to use their digital voices to protect it.

Grounding Our Vision

This week, we are looking toward UNESCO’s Greening Every School initiative. UNESCO reminds us that sustainability isn't just a science topic, it’s a civic responsibility. By using creative tools to communicate environmental needs, our students become the bridge between data and community action.

How Might We Activate "Our Power" This Week?

  • Advocacy through Design: How might we use Google Drawings or the new Canvas for Chrome to create a "Local Power" campaign? Have students design infographics that show one small change their neighborhood can make to save energy.
  • Predictive Problem Solving: In what ways can we use Gemini to draft a "Letter to the Future"? Students can ask Gemini to help them research local environmental policies and then draft a persuasive letter to local leaders advocating for more sustainable school grounds.
  • Interactive Pledges: Imagine using Google Forms to create a community-wide "Earth Day Pledge." Students can track the collective impact of small changes. For example, reducing plastic use or switching to ChromeOS Flex to extend the life of old hardware.
  • A Nudge for You: If you’re looking for a low-prep way to celebrate tomorrow, explore the Google Earth Education "Explorers" stories. It is a creative, interactive way for students to travel the globe and see how indigenous communities and scientists are working together to protect our most fragile ecosystems.

Your Turn to Lead the Conversation: Earth Day is celebrated in 192 countries, but it looks different in every GEG "home." What is one creative project your students are working on this week to celebrate "Our Power, Our Planet"? Share your Earth Day wins in the comments!
