The Global Connection Series is an initiative designed to connect educators across the globe. Our mission is to foster a vibrant community where teachers share best practices in education, social-emotional learning, and active learning with Google.
Below is a recap of our second episode along with a complete recording of the conversation! Be sure to follow along, as a brand-new episode and educator spotlight will be released once a month.
Host: Claudia Fisanotti (@CFisanotti)
Guest: Elisabetta Nanni (@Elisnanni)
Our discussion centered on a core philosophy: pedagogy before technology. Technology is only truly valuable when it makes learning more active, inclusive, and meaningful.
🎵The Music Learning Cycle
We examined a structured, cyclical approach to music lessons that guides students through four key stages:
- Listen: Exploring soundscapes and analyzing pieces.
- Create: Composing original tracks and audio elements.
- Reflect: Evaluating choices and deepening critical thinking.
- Share: Presenting creative work to peers and the community.
Gemini acts as an assistant throughout this cycle, helping educators brainstorm listening tasks, simplify instructions, propose inclusive alternatives, and generate composition prompts.
📝Prompt Recipes for Music (and Beyond!)
To ensure AI outputs are pedagogically sound and tailored to learners, Elisabetta introduced a structured "Prompt Recipe" formula. This method can easily transcend music education to enhance problem-solving across any discipline:
- Role: Define the persona (e.g., music educator or composer).
- Purpose: Set the goal (e.g., intro, jingle, or soundscape).
- Style: Specify mood, tempo, culture, and instruments.
- Elements: Structure, rhythm, dynamics, and lyrics.
- Constraints: Account for age, language level, and safety.
- Reflection: Include a mandatory phase where students justify their musical choices.
🛠️ Tool Development & Accessibility: MusAILab
To help teachers bring these concepts to life, we showcased MusAILab—a reusable educational assistant designed to support music teachers with inclusive technology.
- Multi-Language Access: Available in both English and Italian to support an international community of educators.
- Interdisciplinary STEAM Demo: During the live walkthrough, Elisabetta demonstrated how the tool generates an interdisciplinary STEM activity for 12-year-olds, complete with thinking routines, acoustic exploration, assessment rubrics, and UDL-aligned self-assessment checklists.
🌟Student Empowerment
By combining hands-on musical exploration with structured AI support, educators can successfully shift students from passive listeners to active creators. This approach creates a win-win scenario, unlocking new paths for student potential, creativity, and self-expression.
