Hey everyone,

Today’s EDUCAUSE newsletter shared a piece from their archives, "Taming the Digital Jungle." Kyle Bowen, Michael Cato, Jared Johnson and Felix Zuniga really capture the challenges many of us face with disconnected digital tools.

The core idea is that we've accidentally created a "digital jungle" and need to be more intentional about cultivating a "digital garden." For those short on time, here is the TL:DR:

  • The Problem: Most institutions have a chaotic collection of digital tools and data sets that don't connect, which creates silos, hinders collaboration, and leads to general inefficiency.

  • The Risk: This "jungle" isn't just messy; it can create serious security vulnerabilities and privacy risks. Without a centralized way to manage users and applications, it's difficult to get a clear view of your institution's security posture.

  • The Goal: The aim is to move toward a "digital garden" by unifying infrastructure. Think of a well-organized, cloud-native ecosystem where everyone has the right tools for the right tasks, all integrated into a single, manageable platform.

  • The Payoff: Taming this jungle allows us to streamline administrative work through better collaboration, reduce risk with centralized controls, create a seamless learning experience for students, and finally start making truly data-informed decisions with powerful analytics tools.

It’s a quick read and does a great job framing a problem we're all trying to solve. Definitely recommend it!

If you're going to be at EduCause in Nashville in a couple weeks, feel free to PM, and maybe we can say hello in person!
