One of the primary goals of community and technical education has consistently been to provide a direct bridge to a stable career. However, a volatile economic landscape and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence are changing the definition of career-ready. To address this, NYU and SUNY have officially launched the Higher Education Design Lab.
This initiative is designed to move beyond good intentions and incremental measures. By testing reforms against real-world student outcomes across rural, urban, and commuter settings, the Lab aims to provide concrete evidence regarding which interventions actually help graduates thrive.
For those instructing at a community college level, this research will be vital. Whether it involves finding the optimal number of credit hours for career readiness or determining which advising models move the needle for first-generation students, the Design Lab promises to provide the data necessary to validate and improve the high-impact instruction delivered in these settings every day.
