Beyond Training: How Do You Know If Professional Development Actually Changes Classroom Practice?

We often measure the success of professional development by attendance, completion, or certificates. But I’ve been wondering: what happens after the training ends?

A teacher may attend a Google Workspace or AI training and learn many new tools, but that doesn’t necessarily mean those tools will be used meaningfully in the classroom.

So I’m curious about your experience:

How do you know whether professional development has actually changed classroom practice?

Do you use feedback, classroom observations, follow-up sessions, student outcomes, or other indicators?

I’d really like to hear how educators and administrators in different schools approach this.

Professional development should be measured by more than simply completing a training session. Looking at changes in classroom practice, confidence, collaboration, and student outcomes can provide a much clearer picture of whether the learning actually made a difference.
