The Grand Finale: Exam Format & Test-Taking Tips
This final session of the 7-week series served as the Grand Finale, providing a comprehensive roadmap for tackling the Level 1 and Level 2 Google Certified Educator exams. This session featured Judy Keller (GEG Pennsylvania) demonstrating the lab environment and Jessica Johnson and Theresa McSweeney (GEG Idaho) showcasing advanced AI study tools.
1. Registration & Logistics
- Where to Register: Visit goo.gle/gfecerts to sign up.
- Pro Tip: Use your personal email for registration. This ensures that if you change school districts, your certification history stays with you.
- The Window: Once you register, you have 14 days to launch and complete the exam.
- The Launchpad: You will receive a confirmation from noreply@google.com containing the link to the exam Launchpad.
2. What to Expect Inside the Exam
- Time Limit: 180 minutes (3 hours).
- The Format: * 37 Multiple Choice Questions: These assess your pedagogical knowledge of Workspace tools.
- 3 Lab-Based Scenarios: These are performance-based tasks. Each scenario contains 3 specific tasks you must perform in a live "demo" environment.
- Scoring: The exams are pass/fail and are graded by an automated system, not humans.
3. Success Strategies: Accuracy Over Aesthetics
- Incognito Mode: Judy demonstrated that opening an Incognito Window (Ctrl+Shift+N) is essential. This prevents your personal Google accounts from interfering with the temporary test credentials.
- The "Lousy Student" Rule: Do not try to make your work look "pretty." If the task asks you to create a signature, don't worry about the font or colors unless specified. The grading machine is looking for specific data points, not design.
- Donโt Skip: There is no penalty for guessing. Answer every question and attempt every lab task.
- Follow Directions Exactly: Read every word. If the prompt says "Send to Colleague 1," do not send it to "Colleague 2" or use a different email than the one provided in the lab instructions.
Performance Labs: Step-by-Step Demo
Judy walked through a sample lab to demonstrate the workflow of the performance section:
- Start Lab: Once you click "Start," a timer begins and a sidebar provides your temporary credentials (email/password) and collaborator names.
- Sign In: Copy the provided email and password and sign in to the incognito window.
- Execute Tasks: Judy demonstrated creating a Gmail signature.
- Task: Create a signature with Name, Position, and Contact Info that appears automatically.
- The "Check Progress" Button: Many labs have a "Check my progress" button. Use this! Judy showed that if she forgot to enable the signature for "New Emails," the check would fail, allowing her to go back and fix it before the timer ran out.
- End Lab: Once all tasks are green and verified, click End Lab. Note: You cannot restart once you end!
Modern Study Tools: AI & Synthesis
Jessica and Theresa from GEG Idaho introduced how they use Googleโs newest AI tools to help educators prepare:
- Notebook LM: They uploaded the official Google Exam Guides and help center articles into Notebook LM. This allows them to "chat" with the study guide, create instant flashcards, and generate practice quizzes based on official documentation.
- Custom "Gems": They created a specific Study Gem in Gemini. This AI assistant is programmed with exam instructions to act as a "Jeopardy" host or a tutor that provides "one question at a time" quizzes to help with recall.
- GEG Idaho Website: Visit idahogeg.com to access their Willy Wonka-themed practice slides and AI study resources.
If Things Go Wrong...
- Screen Record/Screenshot: If the lab glitches or your screen freezes, take a screenshot immediately.
- Report the Issue: Use this link to submit a ticket to Google.
- Wait Time: If you do not pass, you must wait a specific period (usually 14 days for the first retake) before trying again.
