Purpose

To help you surface what a new teacher may be experiencing right now and identify one small action that increases clarity and belonging.

10-Minute Activity: First-Month Snapshot

On a sheet of paper, make two quick lists:

What Likely Feels Clear

  • Systems and schedules

  • Curriculum expectations

  • A go-to colleague

What May Still Feel Uncertain

  • “Am I meeting expectations?”

  • What strong teaching looks like here

  • When and how to ask for help

  • Whether I truly belong

Now circle one uncertainty you could reduce this week with a small, intentional action.

Clarity builds confidence. Confidence builds commitment.

Optional AI Exercise: Build Empathy with a Prompt

Open your preferred AI tool and try this:

“You are a first-year teacher in my school. It is the end of your first month. Describe what has felt supportive and what still feels uncertain. Be honest but professional.”

Then ask:

“What is one small leadership move that would make a meaningful difference right now?”

Notice patterns.
What feels accurate?
What surprises you?

AI cannot replace real voices. It can help you surface blind spots before you ask better questions in person.

Optional Deeper Dive

The Learning Policy Institute highlights how structured induction, mentoring, and school climate strongly influence early-career teacher retention.

As you reflect, ask:

  • Where are we intentionally clear?

  • Where might we be assuming clarity?
