Students couldn't open a spreadsheet from Google's Applied Digital skills

I was working with a class on a Google Applied Digital skills lesson.

The students were asked to click this link to create a starter project https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vuvXuAaXhcdKYo3s6WU3lUiHgWo1HDHFVTx9gZntsn8/copy

On my staff laptop, the link made a copy of the spreadsheet.

When students tried it, they got this message:

I tried looking for share settings to fix this but I don't know didn't find anything that looked like it would fix this.

Any suggestions?

Who owns the original? The error looks like the students are trying to access a file outside of their domain.

Applied Digital Skills Lessons uses templates that are stored outside the domain (I'm guessing probably made by a Googler and then shared so anyone with the link can access)  - so if students cannot access external documents, none of these would work. The workaround would be for a teacher to make an internal copy and assign it via Google Classroom - which could be done at the same time they push out the ADS Lesson. Has the added bonus that the teacher can see all the work.
