Extended life for Chromebooks.

I read a very interesting article about longer lives for Chromebooks. Ithought this was the most interesting part. Does anyone had any insider info to this?

"The change is to take effect in 2024. Chromebooks released in 2021 and thereafter will automatically update for 10 years. For models that predated 2021, Google said users and IT admins will have the option to transition to a longer automatic updating process. "

Quote from the blog.
"Starting in 2024, if you have Chromebooks that were released from 2021 onwards, you’ll automatically get 10 years of updates. For Chromebooks released before 2021 and already in use, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release (after they receive their last automatic update).1"

I'm just sad that my lovely Asus Flip C302 isn't getting the extension, despite it having great hardware and would easily be useful another few years. 😞

It might be time to investigate if you can use tools like MrChromebox to extend the life outside of Google's environment. I worked with this a little this summer to breathe a little more life into a few Chromeboxes that were stuck on OS 76 that are now running the current version of ChromeOS Flex without issue.

Yes, I have already checked, and IIRC I should be able to unlock it with a physical WP screw. But it just feels unnecessary, since it's a lot more powerful than wimpy student devices.

I'm being dead serious, who can get more than 3 years of life from a chromebook in elementary students hands?  I can barely make them last for three years without falling apart.   And I am using HP Chromebook 11 G8/G9 EE devices which I considered to be fairly well put together.

What are you using with students that last longer?

I think this will most likely benefit those that purchase devices that are already old, like produced the year before last, and never brand new devices.
