Chromebook, Chromecast and Projector

We have our teachers' Chromebooks using Chromecast and a projector in their classrooms.  Is there a way to extend the Chromebook desktop instead of mirroring?

Tried splitting the Chrome window before starting the casting? I mean rip apart the tab from the others, so it becomes two windows.

It's an interesting question, because extended desktop is the default when connecting an external screen via cable.
