What’s New in Google Workspace? Skills Are Coming—and Gems Are Beginning to Transition

Google is introducing reusable AI “skills” that provide Gemini with customized instructions for specific tasks.

For example, an educator might combine:

• A lesson-planning skill
• A district instructional-framework skill
• An accessibility skill
• A family-communication skill
• A school or district brand-voice skill

Unlike a single saved prompt, skills can be layered together to help Gemini produce more consistent and contextually appropriate results.

Google has also announced a gradual transition from Gems to skills. For education customers, the removal of Gems is planned for no earlier than June 2027, providing time to evaluate the change and prepare users.

This is an excellent opportunity for districts to think beyond individual prompting and begin developing shared, governed AI practices.

What reusable AI skill would save the most time for educators in your organization?
