Chromebook Look up/define

I use Google Forms for both formative and summative assessments.  My district uses Chromebooks, therefore Chrome.  My assessments are usually presented in Locked Mode, but because the are using the Chrome browser they are able to use the Look Up/Define feature of the browser.  This nullifies if my students know the information.  Some questions are easy matching or definition questions, but some are situation analysis and they are able to look up key vocabulary in the selection to help them construct their answer.  I NEED HELP.  Google forms are very helpful in assessments and time management.  I hate to have to stop using it.

Hi Mrs.JennyG,  My spanish teachers reported this same issue third week of Feb 2026 in Google Classroom locked browser.  Yes, we need help!

"Students double tap on their chromebook and that's what pops up. Once they hit try it then they can get definitions anytime they want, even on locked tests.   I lock it on Google Classroom and through the google form itself. They've been using this particular tool all year."

Hi @MrsJennyG

Oh, I totally get the frustration Locked Mode feels like it should handle this, but the browser search thing is a real loophole!

Quick thing to check first: is Locked Mode being enforced through the Admin Console at the device level? When it's only set at the form level, students can still get around it. Your IT admin should be able to lock this down properly worth a conversation with them if you haven't had it yet.

If that's already set up and still not working, tools like GoGuardian or Securly can block search in real time during assessments. A lot of districts already have one of these running.

And honestly? For those situational analysis questions, designing them so that Googling a keyword still doesn't give the answer is a game changer. Focus on judgment and application even if they look it up, they still have to think. 😄

Hang in there don't give up on Forms! This is totally solvable. 🙌
