The Classroom of 2036

Published on ‎10-16-2026 05:28 PM by

Every new classroom technology raises the same question: What should change — and what shouldn’t?

That question feels more urgent than ever. Online enrollment keeps climbing. Virtual-teaching assistants powered by generative AI are now a reality. Augmented-reality tools have found a home in welding, engineering, and chemistry courses. And cybersecurity incidents have reminded campus leaders that every new tool comes with new exposure.

Join The Chronicle on Thursday, November 5, at 2 p.m. ET for a candid conversation about the decade ahead. Beth McMurtrie, a senior writer at The Chronicle, will lead a group of experts through realistic scenarios to explore how teaching could evolve, where the guardrails belong, and what makes a college classroom worth showing up for.

Register.

You’ll learn:

  • What the classroom could plausibly look like in 10 years
  • Which elements of teaching and learning shouldn’t change
  • How to vet and pilot emerging tech while safeguarding student data
  • How leaders can make smart bets now without chasing every trend

There are a number of publications called "The Chronicle." I had to Google Beth to find out that she works for The Chronicle of Higher Education. I suggest that you use the full name, at least in the first reference.
