Benchmarking AI Readiness: Global Policy & Guidance Workshop:  In an era of rapid technological change, institutional leaders are moving beyond reactive rules and toward a strategic roadmap that firmly prioritizes learning and cognition. Discover how to leverage policy and guidance to boost AI's impact on learning by joining this interactive, 45-minute workshop hosted by Kristina Ishmael and Anil Hurkadli from Google for Education.  To transition from reactive rules to an ecosystem that prioritizes learning, leadership needs a roadmap that supports the entire institution. This session will invite regional leaders to explore policy and guidance that improves AI’s impact on learning and cognition.

What a great session! Thanks to everyone who attended.

As a quick follow-up, Kristina and I wanted to share links to the 2023 "AI and the Future of Teaching & Learning" report from the U.S. Department of Education (which uses the electric bike metaphor we discussed) and Google for Education's "AI in Education Readiness Assessment" (which helps systems leaders evaluate their current or developing policies and guidance).

As you review the assessment, we invite you to revisit the prompts we used for our breakout exercise (pasted below). They are designed to focus your review and help you understand how the assessment can be helpful to the policy and guidance development processes.

Governance & Procurement
How do Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) need to evolve to support teacher pedagogical agency and guide student use?

Infrastructure & Scalability
How can school systems audit server capacity and device equity across all the students the system serves?

Data & Privacy
What strict boundaries must we set with vendors to ensure student rosters, grades, and essay submissions are completely isolated from external model training?

Safety & Ethics
How can districts establish active screening protocols for classroom-facing AI tutors to detect demographic bias and prevent hallucinations?

Educators & Agency
How can we deploy AI to automate admin tasks to explicitly buy back time for 1-on-1 mentorship?

Learning & Cognition
What does analog preservation look like in elementary and middle school classrooms (e.g., handwriting, oral defense, physical arts) to keep AI from bypassing early child development milestones?
