This is such an insightful article from the Brookings Institute! A couple highlights are captured below, but read the full article here.

As AI becomes more accessible, higher education is increasingly turning to prediction algorithms to inform decisions and target support services.

Prediction algorithms can underestimate success for Black and Hispanic students, disproportionately predicting failure erroneously, even when those students ultimately graduate.

This is a little scary. While I understand why they are doing it, they want their numbers to look good... I just wonder how many students' futures will be crushed because on paper they don't look good. There is no measure for the amount of heart and drive a student has when one person believes in them and gives them a chance.

Students used to be given personality tests that would "determine" which careers they should consider. Not so much different than AI except that today, AI "advice" bears more weight in decision-making. The real problem is that people are placing more value on the supposed objectivity of AI. I don't think any more student futures will be crushed because of AI. Plenty of students already have that happen because of circumstances and sometimes their own bad decisions. AI is just ONE MORE factor in the endless stream of factors that influence decision-making. It's hard enough without it.

Agreed, it's all just depends on the prompt. The rest is on the teachers hand. The AI is always described as a tool. So the full dependency should be avoided.

In realtà, questi studenti erano stati scelti casualmente.
