I can help with YouTube as I was just trying this yesterday. If you turn YouTube off, YouTube is not accessible. The only way students would be able to view a YouTube video is if teachers either add it to Classroom or embed it in a Doc or Slide.

So, as we go through the additional services, we have questions about the following and are also curious about what others are doing with these services (allow or not?).

Google Photos- I am guessing that if not on or turned off for the students they would lose access to any photos saved. If turned back on would the old photos still be there?

Google Groups - If this is turned off, does it just prevent them from being able to create or manage groups but they could still be added to email groups by staff, etc?

Youtube - On the Youtube, does turning off the service just prevent from being able to have a channel, etc. Will the safe mode and videos allowed or blocked still work or does the service need to be on?

Google Photos: Yes, if you turn it back on, any old photos will still be there. There's no way for the admin to delete a user's photos. See https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/Workspace-Q-A/Google-Photos-quota-and-having-it-both-ways/m-p/469738 for more about this.

Google Groups: Yes, people can still be added to groups by those that have access to groups, but they'll have zero access to the Groups UI, meaning that they won't be able to use the web to subscribe, unsubscribe, view archives of a group, etc. (They can still subscribe/unsubscribe/contact the managers by using the listname+subscribe@example.org, listname+unsubscribe@example.org and listname+managers@example.org addresses.)

I'm not sure about YouTube. Maybe someone else can answer that one?

Cheers,

Ian

Thanks! IMO that doesn't make turning that service off for students very appealing.

We have it turned off because students were spending too much time using it for non productive uses. If a teacher needs to have the students access it for an assignment, we put the students in a group that allows YouTube. Then we remove the students when the assignment is done. We have found it to be much better with YouTube turned off for students.

Like I said in my first response, I'm not fully familiar with YouTube, but couldn't you put YouTube into restricted mode instead, limiting which videos are available to your users? I believe some schools even set it up so that all teachers have the ability to approve new videos (I think--it's a vague memory....)

See https://support.google.com/a/answer/6212415?sjid=13642139599578823619-NC and https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6263784?hl=en
