Issues with printing emojis in Google Docs

So we are having a "fun"/headache document a teacher made as a template for our students.

When we try to print this document on paper it shows the orange and green emojis for the actual headers but these don't show up in the Table of contents when printing on paper. (Both through Papercut and USB printing)

When I open it in the Google PDF viewer (Gallery and/or web version) they do show up but when I open them in the Adobe Acrobat (web) viewer they also do the same as if they are printed on paper, so no TOC emojis.

Anyone has any idea what might cause this and how to fix this?

We are trying to do it digitally but for some students, they need it physically printed so it needs to be solved or we need a good alternative.

I have an anonymized version available here and it does the exact same thing as the original document.

Does it make any difference if you take the path Insert/Special Characters versus Insert/Emoji ?

One may be print-friendlier than the other.

Thanks for the reply Don, I have tried that as well but unfortunately that didn't do anything.

After some more troubleshooting we have determined a possible cause being the printer drivers. Since we mainly used Papercut and we have a few different printers we use a generic printer driver and this is most likely the issue. Trying it directly from a Windows machine over USB fixed it, not a solution but at least it points us in the (hopefully) right direction.

Yes, drivers need to be compatible with both the source and the destination, as it is there to convert the content into something the printer understands.

En algunos casos puede ocurrir que las imagenes estan en RGB y las impresoras configuradas como CMYK que es el formato que suelen utilizar las imprentas.

otra solución (quizas) más sencilla y ademas permite descubrir las bondades de Documentos de Google es insertar / dibujo / nuevo y crear el icono con los colores o degradación que necesiten, luego copiar y pegar las veces que sea neceario.

Puedo explicar el paso a paso si tienen dudas.

Hi Yerko,

Thanks for the extensive reply. The CMYK and RGB shouldn't be the issue as the emojis in the Table of contents (TOC) is the same emoji as the one in the headers it auto-generates from. Yet it prints the emoji in the header but not in the TOC, so it's more an issue with the TOC generating somehow being different in such a way that the printers don't know what to do with it.

Unfortunately, the image/drawing solution won't solve it as the main issue is the automatically generated table of contents. Those will never show images and only text, and thus emojis were used to update the document once and have it auto-update the table (of contents) at the top. A good suggestion but not an option, unfortunately.

Ahora comprendo su problema @NielsBrockmeier quizas siguiendo el mismo ejemplo y con un poco de creatividad, perdon por no ser tan exacto en los detalles de degradación pero se aproxima a la solución

That part is a good alternative for using emojis but that was already working, the emojis in front of the headers (Dutch/German/English) do print as emojis like normal. It's the emojis in the table of contents that do not print, the ones shown below:

These do print:

But when you change these ^ to the drawings they won't show up in the Table of contents and thus the document loses it's functionality to quickly see the status of the subjects/projects.

Mi sugerencia entonces es despues de crear la tabla generar una copia del documento (para la impresión) y ahí reemplazar con los dibujos como en la explicación/sugerencia anterior, de ese modo tendra la version en línea para utilizar el indice y la impresa donde si se vean las imágenes.

@NielsBrockmeier I have had issues with printing the images from PDFs on Windows computers and resolved this by using the Print as Image option. Can you try clicking the "Print as Image" option when creating the PDF? Then selecting the print as image from the Google Print dialog box? Is that available to you when using PaperCut? Also, are you using PaperCut's Web Print? If you are using Web Print, they have 2 options: Default Mode and Sandbox Mode. Sandbox accepts more file formats and converts them to print jobs. If this does not work, make sure you connect with PaperCut's support since they are usually great at resolving these issues.
