HP Chromebook G9 Charging Port Repair

Hi,

My district has multiple Chromebooks that cannot be charged due to the broken USB charging port. I believe that the pins inside the charging port get bent and the USB C cable can no longer fully be inserted into the device.

The problem I am having is being able to repair the charging port due to it being a part of the motherboard. In my opinion, buying a new motherboard is not worth the price.

I would like to know if anybody has run into this situation and knows a good fix!

Yes, we ran into this on old versions of the Asus 204, they only had one USB port and it was on the motherboard. The first thing we did was make sure not to buy any model without a separate USB on a small daughterboard that could easily be replaced (the later 204s and the new Asus 1100 have this). The guy that fixes our Chromebooks did also eventually figure out how to actually replace the USB-C port on the motherboard. Very fiddly to get the old one off and a new one soldered on, we only have about a 50% success rate but it's better than nothing!

I may have just gotten one in with the same issue. HP 11MK G9. Can you see if there's a bit of metal that looks out of place? I can clearly see what looks like a big metal flake but it looks to big to be a pin and it's silver. Don't have anything thin enough and non-conductive to try and grab it.

Yes,

I think we are having the same issue. It looks like one of the pins inside the charging port is either broken or bent the wrong way. I'll have to compare it to a working one to see if I can bend it back in place.

Mine's on the side of the tab where there shouldn't be a pin unless it's a ground pin that bent out and around. From what I can tell the pins shouldn't be silver but I can't get a light oriented properly and see clearly into the port and I don't have a microscope on hand either. My current thought was maybe it was a retaining clip/bump from the charger but the chargers in that section of the cart seem to have all their clips/bumps.
